VMware Certified Professional

vmware certification

I’m very proud to announce that  I’ve finally achieved VCP6-DCV certification. It was a long path (more than half a year).

If you are interested in certification, there are some required steps that you have to pass to successfully achieve VCP.

What’s needed

Step 1: You MUST complete one of the official training courses (Microsoft does not require anything of the kind). I finished vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage [V6]

Step 2: self-study (3 –6 months as a minimum, beer included)

Step 3: As a true Hyper-V fan Улыбка, I have never been certified for vSphere, so for completely new candidates you must pass the following exams:

How to Prepare

1) In my case, training course was very ordinary . It I could change it I’d prefer Optimize&Scale . So, If you are have some experience with virtualization and clustering, your choice is definitely “Optimize & Scale” or “Designing vSphere”

2) Hundreds/thousands hours of diving into VMware Documentation Center , Hands-On Labs and your demo. My demo is built on 3 nested ESXi hosts, vCenter Appliance, Replication , Update Manager and vRealize Operations Manager + remote station with PowerCLI/CLI and vSphere C# client (by the way, it’s going to be deprecated with the next major release).
vCloud Air is perfectly covered in hands-on lab which provided by VMware. If you don’t have enough resources you can, for instance,  do not deploy vRealize Operations (In my lab it is a reason of overconsumption and sometimes it’s very sloooow..unfortunately, my little datacenter is also limited by RAM/Storage) and learn one @vlabs as well

3) If you have CBTNuggets or Pluralsight subscriptions, I recommend to watch  their training courses (search for vSphere 5/vSphere 6/designing VMware infrastructure)

4) Free unofficial study guide

5) Official guides and practice tests

What’s next

Wanna free polo shirt or own profile page? Get VCDX certification Улыбка.

VCDX is the highest certification level provided by VMware. I‘m not sure that I will ever get one / dreams..dreams (sometimes they come true).

Let’s back to the real life..If you plan to be more recognized you need to prove your “certified” knowledge in real world (~complex projects). I hope I will have some.

Until then,

have a great weekend!

Update Rollup 10 For System Center 2012 R2

New rollup for System Center 2012 R2 is available. It brings improvements and fixes for VMM, DPM , SPF and Azure Pack. You can install them by Windows Update or download manually using the links below (see each component article to obtain specific installation instructions)

Name LINK
Data Protection Manager https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3143871
Orchestrator
Operations Manager
Service Manager
Service Provider Foundation https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3147172
Virtual Machine Manager https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3147167
WAP https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3158609
WAP Web Sites

The following issues are fixed in Windows Azure Pack:

  • Windows Server 2016 only: Support for Encryption Supported VMs. Windows Server 2016, Virtual Machine Manager and Service Provider Foundation provide support for Encrypted Supported VMs, now WAP provides support for the three type of VMs in Windows Server 2016: regular VMs, Shielded VMs, and Encryption Supported VMs.
  • Windows Server 2016 only: Fix to incorrect Format of volume Signature in PDK File downloaded through WAP.
  • When a tenant updates a VM Size, the Hardware Profile ID is passed along to the SPF/VMM Virtual Machine Update event, allowing custom runbooks to change other properties as necessary.
  • Fix to Virtual Network property labels in the Quota page. The quotas for “Site-to-Site VPN” and “External IP addresses” labels in the Admin Portal VM Resource Provider are misleading because they read “per network.” They actually are “per subscription.”
  • Fix: When you update the VM Cloud Resource Provider, a duplicate Port setting is added leading ManagementOData to fail and return an error message that reads, “An item with the same key has already been added.”
  • Ability for the tenant user to add a network adapter to a VM while the VM is running. In UR 9.1 and previous versions, new NICs could be added only after the VM was stopped.
  • Ability for the WAP Admin to include a SQL Server into multiple availability groups for HA configurations.
  • Ability for the WAP Admin to include a server that’s running Microsoft SQL Server into multiple availability groups for HA configurations.
  • Ability for the WAP user to enable the “Always On” feature of WAP websites.

For VMM please see the “Known issues from previous update rollups” and do workarounds if some mentioned issues take place
